Alfonso III. was the first son of the Duke Cesare I. d'Este of Modena and Reggio and his wife Virginia de' Medici and was born on 22nd October 1591. Not only did he bear a close resemblance to his mother (compare their eyes!), but he was also very close to her. In 1608 he was married to Isabella of Savoyen (1591-1626), the second daughter of Duke Charles Emanuel I. of Savoy and his wife Catalina Micaela of Spain. Alfonso III. and Isabella are among the few high aristocratic couples who loved each other deeply. They had 14 children, including the son Francesco I. (1610-1658), the next Duke of Modena and Reggio, and the daughter Caterina (1613-1628). When Isabella died on 22nd August 1626 after giving birth to her last child, her daughter Anna Beatrice (1626-1690), Alfonso III. and also their children broke mentally down. After the death of his father in 1628, Alfonso III. succeeded him and became the next Duke of Modena and Reggio, but half a year later he resigned in favour of his son Francesco I. and henceforth lived in a Capuchin monastery until his death in 1644.
Have a look at the right hand and the position of the fingers of Virginia de' Medici and her son.
