Francesco I. was the second son of Duke Alfonso III. d'Este of Modena and Reggio and his wife Isabella of Savoy and became the next Duke of Modena and Reggio in 1629, because his father, suffering very much from the death of his wife, decided to retreat to a Capuchin monastery where he died in 1644. Francesco I. was married three times. His first two wives were the daughters Maria and Vittoria of Ranuccio I. Farnese (1569-1622), Duke of Parma and Piacenza. Francesco I. married Maria Farnese (1615-1646) on 11th January 1631. She gave him nine children, among others: Alfonso IV. (1634-1642), Isabella (1635-1666) und Maria (1644-1684), and through his daughter Isabella he became the great-grandfather of the famous Spanish Queen Elisabetta Farnese (1692-1766). His second wife was Vittoria Farnese (1618-1649), whom he married on 12th February 1648. Vittoria was the mother of his daughter Vittoria. His third wife was Lucrezia Barberini (1628-1699). They married on 14th October 1654. Lucrezia Barberini gave him his son Rinaldo d'Este.
