Her marriage to the Spanish King Philip III. was planned for the year 1617. He had already lost his first wife, Margaret of Inner-Austria, in the year 1611; but Eleonora became very ill with smallpox and died before her wedding. According to another source: "... in December 1617 his [Cosimo's II.] sister Eleonora died, she had been engaged to Philip III. of Spain, but he broke off the engagement, and it is stated that Eleonora died of a broken heart in consequence."
