Italy — Guidantonio or Guido Antonio da Montefeltro

Guidantonio or Guido Antonio da Montefeltro, Count of Urbino (in the middle in the front)

Guidantonio da Montefeltro, an important Condottiere of the 15th century, shows himself here with the specific colours of the Montefeltro, the Black, the Dark-Yellow and the Light-Yellow, and the specific symbol, the black scorpion (forget the nonsense about the coat-of-arms of this dynasty that you find on Wikipedia all over the world - as usual one is copying from the other!). When a member of the Montefeltro wanted to show us, that he or she (in this case, born into the family or married into it), belonged to this dynasty, they would use their specific colours and their specific symbol to tell us, look for example at: Elisabetta Gonzaga (1471-1526), the wife of the last Montefeltro, Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino. By the way, her portrait is an identification portrait. Everybody, who knows the specific colours and the specific symbol of the Montefeltro and knows the history of the costume (to date the painting) has no problems to identify this lady correctly.
