"Hence the [Milanese] Court hung upon his [Leonardo's] fables and satires; his epigrams were on every one's lips. He discussed pure mathematics with Luca Pacioli, Galeazzo [da] Sanseverino consulted him on military questions, while he joined in the conferences upon philosophy and literature conducted by Il Moro and other kindred spirits of the court." (in: Cecilia M. Ady: A History of Milan under the Sforza, London 1907, p. 138).
This self-portrait of Leonardo da Vinci was made around 1478/79. The art historians attributed it to Giovanni Cariani (c. 1490-1547) who was not even born when Leonardo da Vinci made it. Nowadays it is in one of the many storage-rooms in the National Gallery of Art, Washington. I bought a colour version of this painting from them for 50 American Dollars. But I had to sign a document not to use it for my book and my website. Sorry! This portrait painting is ideal to study Leonardo's facial features. He had a aquiline nose with a prominent bridge and a bump at the tip, a protruding lower jaw and lip – a trait he inherited from his father's side about which he made a lot of jokes –, beautiful brown eyes, a French Fork beard – an old tradition of his father's family, all male members wore this style of beard –, and long brown hair with a tinge of red. There is an interesting page on the internet showing all the different kinds of beards. Have a look especially at the beard of Leonardo da Vinci, the French Fork Beard, on this fantastic website about: Beards.
The painter was with very high probability Andrea del Sarto, because this portrait of Leonardo da Vinci is very good and very realistic. Therefore the painter knew him personally. Andrea del Sarto and Leonardo da Vinci spent some time together in France in 1518. But Andrea del Sarto never saw Isabella of Aragon in person and had no idea what Leonardo's sons looked like, when they were little boys.
