“Order according to which our most illustrious lord [the Milanese Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza] wishes the rooms in the Castle of Pavia to be painted and repainted, June 22, 1469: ... [Among others] in the little room where the ladies eat [are to be painted] her most illustrious ladyship [the Milanese Duchess Bona of Savoy], the most illustrious lady Isabella playing ballone or poma with her ladies in waiting, or at trionfi or pelluco [all various ball games] and Virgilio, Don Biasio, and Zohane Antonio the court fool should be in it, and the female dwarf is to be bringing picked mushrooms to my lady. In the tower room, their most illustrious lordships, and my lady as a Turk, with the nurse, and the most illustrious Count of Pavia [the eldest legitimate son of Galeazzo Maria Sforza, Gian Galeazzo II. Maria], and their lordships could be caressing him, and Novissa should be in it.” (Original text in Archivio storico lombardo, Vol. 3, 1879, 547).
next to his cousin Costanzo Sforza, Lord of Pesaro (first on the left side on the brown horse), the friend of his family, Cosimo de' Medici (the second on the right side on a brown horse), and his father, Francesco Sforza (on the far right side on a white horse)
His hooked nose in this portrait of him is a symbol for the House of Sforza because their ancestor Muzio Attendolo Sforza had this kind of special nose – in real life Galeazzo Maria Sforza didn't have this kind of ugly nose. He was a very handsome man. The important Sforza symbol was used in this case to show everybody who looked at the portrait that he was a Sforza!
Above him is one of the first symbols of the House of Sforza: the apple- or pear-like quince.
The colours of the House of Visconti-Sforza, Red and White, are shown very visibly in this painting, which was made after the assassination of the duke.
On the left side we can see his illegitimate sons Alessandro (on the far left side) as Saint John the Evangelist and Carlo (next to Alessandro, the second on the left) as Saint Leonard, on the right side probably Cecco and Giovanni Simonetta as Saint Benedict and Saint John the Baptist – at the bottom the donor Bishop Settala is depicted.
If you are interested in learning the symbols or emblems of the Visconti and Sforza, then please buy my books: "Wer ist Mona Lisa?" and/ or Bianca Maria Visconti.
His mother Bianca Maria Visconti (in the middle) is lending her facial features to the Virgin and his father Francesco Sforza (on the left) his facial features to Saint Joseph. Two of the favourite saints of the Visconti and the Sforza were also added to this altarpiece: Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Clara of Assisi
