Claudia de' Medici, the youngest daughter of Ferdinand I. de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, painted as Saint Christine of Bolsena, the patron saint of her mother

Claudia was the ninth and youngest child of Ferdinand I. de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and his wife Christina of Lorraine. She was named after her maternal grandmother Claude of France (1547-1575), Duchess of Lorraine.

You are able to identify the Saints as you are able to identify the men and women and children in the Renaissance portraits with the help of their specific symbols. The specific symbols of Christine of Bolsena are: the fiery furnace, the millstone, arrows, the grate, and serpents. One or more symbols can be used for the identification. The symbols for Saint Catherine of Alexandria are: the broken wheel, a palm frond, a crown, a book and a sword. Here in this portrait three symbols of Catherine of Alexandria were used: the broken wheel, the palm frond and the crown.
