This altarpiece, made by Margarito of Arezzo around 1265, is the oldest one, on which I could recognize members of the Visconti lending their facial features to Saints. The great-uncle of Matteo I. Visconti, the mighty Milanese Archbishop Ottone Visconti (1207-1295), for example is lending his facial features to his personal favourite Saint John the Evangelist and also to the other saints depicted on this altarpiece.
Matteo I. Visconti had the following ten children with his wife Bonacosa († 1321), a daughter of Squarcino Borri: 1. Floramonda († 1321), wife of Guido Mandelli, Count of Maccagno; 2. Galeazzo I. (1277-1328); 3. Caterina († c. 1305), wife of Alboino I. della Scala († 1311), Lord of Verona; 4. Zaccarina († 1328), wife of Ottone Rusconi, Lord of Como; 5. Marco († 1329); 6. Giovanni (1290-1354), Archbishop of Milan; 7. Luchino I. (1292-1349); 8. Stefano († 1327); 9. Agnese, wife of Cecchino della Scala, Lord of Verona; und 10. Achilla, wife of Guglielmo della Pusterla. Further more Matteo I. Visconti had an illegitimate son, Antonio († nach 1339).
