Her cousin and husband Gian Galeazzo Visconti is shown as Jesus Christ; Saint Ambrose (on the left side), the main Saint of the Milanese Dukedom, is also not missing. The person, a nun or an abbess, who commissioned this painting can be seen on the lower right side.
her husband and cousin Gian Galeazzo Visconti, her father-in-law and uncle Galeazzo II. Visconti, her father Bernabò Visconti, her mother Regina della Scala and her mother-in-law and aunt Bianca of Savoy (from the left to the right side)
with her husband, the Milanese Duke Giangaleazzo Visconti (in the middle beneath her) and her two sons Giovanni Maria and Filippo Maria
Caterina Visconti is depicted with the specific colours of her family, red and white, a white dress and a red book as her father, Bernabò Visconti, loved to do it. He preferred to be depicted as Saint Benedict of Nursia with his white monk's habit and his red book of rules. Caterina's mother, Regina della Scala, can be seen next to her on the right side and her real husband, Gian Galeazzo Visconti, in the front of the left corner. Her little son Giovanni Maria, who stands next to his father, gives us the information, when this work was done: c. 1389/90.
Caterina Visconti is lending her facial features to Saint Catherine of Alexandria and her two sons to the Saints Cosmas and Damian, who were also brothers and in addition doctors of medicine.
This portrait of her was made in the 18th century. The painter richly decorated her dress with her favourite Visconti-Symbol: the wheat ear.
